from an engraved plate attributed to Augsburg printmaker Martin Engelbrecht (1684–1756) in the early
eighteenth century. It is one print in a series on the theme

(the causes of

One Who Was Impoverished Making Gold
From now on let laboratory work be cursed by me,
Ah, if only I had never tried it,
I have searched for the Philosopher's Stone in the fire,
And now I have found the Stone of Fools in my head,
Nobody ever got rich from making gold,
But many have ended up on a beggar's staff.

I am poor now and have reclaimed my life,
